There are gaping holes in our US nuclear deterrence system. Basically, it will ONLY work when EVERYTHING goes right …
Our leaders would have to be unflappable,
Our officials would have to respond quickly and follow all the protocols,
Our communication systems would have to perform flawlessly,
And everyone would have to execute their role without making any mistakes.
You know … like when the Trump Administration responded to the Texas floods (Oops!) … or sent Kilmar Abrego Garcia to El Salvadore (Oops!) … or met with Putin instead of Zelenskyy (Oops!) …
72 minutes. In her well researched non-fiction book, ‘Nuclear War: A Scenario,” Pulitzer Prize winner Annie Jacobsen presents a hypothetical account in which international relations collapse due to mistakes and misunderstandings, then they escalate quickly (in 72 minutes) into an all-out nuclear war killing 5 billion people.
Well researched. Non-fiction. 5B people.
Jacobsen’s book has been optioned for a movie by the Dune Trilogy’s production company, Legendary Entertainment, and its director, Denis Villeneuve. It promises to be an epic film that amplifies the urgency of these gaps. Unfortunately for us, (and the rest of the world) they’re not going to make this movie until after they finish their 3rd Dune movie. ( Oops? )
Can the world afford to wait? Short Answer: No.
Fortunately, we can take action now. There are bills in the US House and Senate that will fill these gaps. We just need to make it a priority for our elected officials to pass them!
