This week, Trump attempted to strong arm the DC police with federal military troops, claiming he was getting “tough on crime.” But as Rachel Maddow pointed out in her excellent show on Monday, 8/11, if that were true, why did he …
pardon the Jan 6th criminals?
pardon a 3-time convicted murderer?
allow a flagrant criminal to get off easy by fabricating accusatons against Kilmar Ábrego García?
move Epstien’s accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell, to a chi-chi prison in exchange for her Trump-friendly testimony?
It’s hard for us reasonable people to believe what he says when we see what he does. (See today’s Action 1 on Trump’s takeover of DC).
Also this week, Trump made the groundless claim that we need a mid-decade census (which typically costs the tax payers $15B a pop and only happens only in years that end in “0”). — Really? Why?
He said,
So, he REALLY wants this census to take place before the 2026 elections, but why?
The line about excluding illegal immigrants could just be red meat he’s throwing to his MAGA allegient. Note that the potential impacts for reduced funding due to lower census counts would cut across both Red and Blue states (i.e., Florida and Texas have 2 of the highest immigrant populations in the country, second only to California). Yours truely is skeptical that this is his primary goal.
But the piece about calling the census before the next election — that may be the real deal here. We know from the DOGE raids that he wants to gather data on all of us. Data, in the hands of the Trump Administration, will be used differently than it‘s been used by other administrations. We need to watch that closely to see what he’s trying to do there. (And take action now to nip it in the bud in Action 4 below.)

Action 4: National - How to Protect the US Census From Trump’s Attempt to Corrupt It -Trump wants to change our constitutionally defined, once-a-decade CENSUS in two big ways: (1) He wants to move the census up (from its scheduled time in 2030) to before the 2026 election.
