The Laken Riley Act - AOC Tells It Like It Is!

The people who voted for this bill may be lining their pockets with private prison money. Watch AOC’s great take down of Laken Riley Act!
On Jan 20th and 22nd, the Senate and House voted on the Laken Riley Act and passed it, and today, 1/29, Trump signed it into law. Like AOC said, we need to ask all of our Elected Officials who voted FOR the bill if they own stock in Private Prisons!
The first thing to know about private prisons is that their profit model depends on keeping as many people incarcerated as long as possible. The second is that they often ‘rent’ out the labor of their prisoners to make more money … for themselves. In that respect, they are pretty darn close to being modern day slave owners. Third, private prison owners typically have big bucks to pay for lobbyists who can persuade Congresspeople to pass bills to support them. It looks like that’s what happened here with the Laken Riley Act.

Remember to personalize the first and last paragraphs of each script!
Short Script 1 (for calls and postcards) - “Thank you for voting ‘Nay’ on the Laken Riley Act”
Dear [Senator’s/Representative's Name],
I’m writing to thank you for voting ‘Nay’ on the Laken Riley Act.
I admire you for standing up for due process, defending just and humane treatment of immigrants, and thwarting the power grab of the private prisons represented in the Laken Riley Act.
While other [Senators/Representatives] cowed to the pressure of the moment, you stood your ground, and I appreciate it.
Sincerely, [Your name, address]
Short Script 2 (for calls and postcards) - “I’m Disappointed that you voted ‘Yay’ on the Laken Riley Act”
Dear [Senator’s/Representative's Name],
I’m writing to express my deep disappointment with you for voting ‘Yea’ on the Laken Riley Act. I am ashamed to be your constituent.
By voting ‘Yea,’ you failed to defend humane and fair treatment of immigrants, and you supported the power grab of the private prison system. Your vote leads me to wonder: Do you hope to profit personally from the private prisons?
Please respond with whether or not you have any vested interest in private prison companies.I have a right to know.
Sincerely, [Your name, address]
Long Script 3 (Letter / Email) - “Thank you for voting Nay on the Laken Riley Act”
Dear [Senator’s/Representative's Name],
I’m writing to thank you for voting ‘Nay’ on the Laken Riley Act.
I admire you for standing up for due process, which this bill will deteriorate by mandating the detainment of anyone who is merely accused of a non-violent crime as minor as shoplifting.
I applaud you for opposing this law which will allow attorneys general to seek federal court orders that could force the US State Department to stop issuing visas to countries that refuse to accept nationals eligible for deportation. Attorneys general have no place setting international law.
But most importantly, I’m glad you tried to thwart the power grab of the private prisons represented in the Laken Riley Act.
While other [Senators/Representatives] cowed to the pressure of the moment, you stood your ground. You showed leadership, and for that, I am proud to be your constituent.
Thank you for all you do,
Sincerely,
[Your name, address]
Long Script 4 (Letter / Email) - “I’m Disappointed that you voted ‘Yay’ on the Laken Riley Act”
Dear [Senator’s/Representative's Name],
I’m writing to express my deep disappointment with you for voting ‘Yea’ on the Laken Riley Act. I am ashamed to be your constituent.
By voting ‘Yea,’ you simultaneously failed to defend humane and fair treatment of immigrants, gave any old attorney general permission to override our Federal Government, and you supported a power grab from the private prison system.
Your vote leads me to question: Do you hope to profit personally from the private prisons who will reap millions from this bill?
Please respond with whether or not you have any vested interest in private prison companies. As your constituent, I have a right to know.
Thank you for all you do,
Sincerely,
[Your name, address]
Thank you so much for helping us save our Democracy!
