The Freedom Writers Respond to the Laken Riley Act Votes
Yes, Congresspeople, we’re paying attention.
Watch AOC as she tells it like it is about the Laken Riley Act!
On Jan 20th and 22nd, the Senate and House voted on the Laken Riley Act and passed it. Like the woman said, we need to ask any of our Elected Officials who voted FOR the bill if they own stock in Private Prisons!
If you’re not familiar with private prisons, the first thing you need to know is that their profit model depends on keeping as many people incarcerated as long as possible. The second thing to know is that they often ‘rent’ out the labor of their prisoners to make more money … for themselves. In that respect, they are deeply akin to slave owners. Third, private prison owners typically have big bucks to pay for lobbyists who can persuade Congresspeople to pass bills to support them … as it appears they have successfully done with the Laken Riley Act.
Private prisons, in short, are very evil, very powerful anti-justice institutions that are allowed by our Congress and State Legislators (and us) to thrive on American soil.
Do you remember the story “Noise vs Power” about the fictitious ‘Senator Russell’ that we posted on 1/14/25? Well, now that the vote on the Laken Riley Act has been cast, in today’s actions, we’re going to send 3 messages in response to that vote: 1 to our US Representative and one to each of our 2 US Senators based on the way they voted.
That means you’ll need to (A) look up how your 3 Elected Officials voted (step by step instructions are in the Action Sheet) and (B) use either the “Thank You for Voting Against …” or “I’m Disappointed That You Voted For …” scripts (both scripts are provided in the Action Sheet) to contact each Elected Official accordingly.
So, even though you only have 1 Action Sheet today, it involves sending those 3 people their respective messages.
This type of response AFTER a vote is cast is VERY IMPACTFUL. It tells your elected officials that you are watching and paying attention. This type of action makes the difference between NOISE and POWER, so we’re going to be using it a lot this year.
OK! Let’s get busy!
As always, if you like to contact your elected officials with POSTCARDS, remember to buy your postcards and stamps ahead of time, so you’ll be ready when the Freedom Writer ACTION SHEETS come out every Tuesday and Saturday at 8am.
If you want more information about which contact channels (i.e., visit / call /postcard / letter /email) work better than others and why, read our INFO SHEET on the subject.
