Hello, Freedom Writers!
My Irish ancestors came to the United States in the 1840’s on death ships. They were fleeing the great potato famine, a tragedy caused by the neglect and injustice of a tyrannical British King against Catholics. The Irish voyagers who were lucky enough to make it alive to these shores soon found that they were despised, and treated like animals by the white supremacists who ruled at the time. The Irish, in the 1840’s, were considered non-white and “less than human.”
>> NOTE: I am acutely aware that, as my Irish-American ancestors assimilated into US culture, some of them made the unethical decision to adopt the ways of their tormentors and cast judgment on “others” to make themselves feel more superior (most notably, many Irish-Americans were notoriously racist toward black people). I, by no means, defend the racist actions of any American, Irish-American or otherwise. That’s how racism works. It’s insidious in every respect. <<
Given our current immigration situation, however, I find myself thinking a lot about what my Irish ancestors experienced as they arrived on these shores in the 1840’s. They came here for freedom. They came here in the hope of fulfilling their potential. They came here because they knew that eating grass to survive was not the life they wanted for their children.
In short, they chose to risk their lives, and the lives of their children on death ships for one thing: THE PROMISE OF FREEDOM.
FREEDOM.
This is why the Freedom Writers write.
Recently, our beautiful country has not been doing a great job of living up to that promise. But, we’re not done. This game isn’t over. Our history is still being written. And the Freedom Writers, as well as many other activist groups, are writing it.
On No Kings Day (this Saturday), we’re going to show the world what we’re made of. We’re made of immigrants. We are Americans. We fly Lincoln’s flag (not the other guy’s) because Lincoln’s flag is the flag of freedom. And we ALSO fly the flags of our origin nations, because …
WHAT REALLY MAKES AMERICA GREAT IS THAT we are a nation of immigrants.
So first, today, please do all the important CAD actions below, and then on Saturday, fly the flag(s) that are meaningful to you at the No Kings Day Protests. We look forward to seeing you there!

The CAD (Coordinated Action Dispatch) Team is an Action Team of Indivisible Massachusetts Coalition.
Each week, the CAD Team receives suggested actions from a wide range of activists through its CAD Team Action Submission Form, and works with legislative experts (the Indivisible, ACLU, Common Cause, Progressive Mass and MIRA) to vet and prioritize a short list of actions for the week. What can individuals do over here to support? My actions so far have been negative ones: not using Amazon, trying to avoid Google, Facebook, that sort of thing. Is there something positive we can do?
